The Town of Yemassee Municipal Election set for November 7, 2023, Filing Period begins Friday, August 25, 2023, at 12 noon and will close Friday, September 8, 2023, at 12 noon. The Town of Yemassee is closed on Labor Day, September 4, 2023, and no filings will be accepted Labor Day. Late filings cannot be accepted.


The Town of Yemassee Municipal General Election will be held Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Voters may cast their ballot for two Town Council seats. Those seats are currently held by Council member(s) Peggy Bing O’Banner and Alfred Washington. All Mayor and Town Council seats are at-large and non-partisan.

Candidates wishing to file for the offices of Town Council and appear on the ballot in the November 7, Town of Yemassee Municipal Election must do the following.

  1. Must be a South Carolina registered voter who resides within the town limits of Yemassee.
  2. Go online to the SC Election Commission Website to obtain and complete a Statement of Intention of Candidacy – Non-Partisan Form. Form can be accessed at https://tinyurl.com/Yemassee2023Election
  3. Pay the required filing fee ($150 for Town Council) by paying in-person with the Town Administrator, Matthew Garnes. Payment methods accepted include Cash, Check or Money Order. Checks and Money Orders should be made payable to the Town of Yemassee.
  4. Recommended filing procedure: Make an appointment with Town Administrator, Matthew Garnes. Please complete & bring the required Statement of Intent of Candidacy – Nonpartisan form, government issued identification card, voter registration card and filing payment to appointment. The Town of Yemassee operates under a Council form of government, with a mayor and four additional council members, all of whom are elected at-large. Council member terms are staggered every two years. Each term is 4 years in length. Council members are compensated $4,800 annually for their service. The mayor is compensated $6,000 annually. In accordance with the Code of Ordinances for the Town of Yemassee, and the South Carolina Code of Laws, election results are determined under the nonpartisan election and runoff election method. If needed, a runoff election will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2023. A runoff election is required in the event of a tie. If you are new to the Town of Yemassee and wish to register in Beaufort County and submit your voter registration by mail, it must be postmarked by October 10th. The deadline to register in person is 5:00 PM, Friday October 6, 2023. The last day to register online, fax or email is 11:59 PM, Sunday, October 8, 2023.

If you are new to the Town of Yemassee and wish to register in Hampton County and will submit your voter registration by mail, it must be postmarked by October 4th.
