Solid Waste Request for Proposal

YEMASSEE, SC – The Town of Yemassee requests proposals to provide weekly residential solid waste pickup services for the town's residents.

“The current five-year contract was executed on June 28, 2019, and expires on June 29, 2024,” said Matt Garnes, Town Administrator.  “We will maximize our resident's tax dollars while ensuring we get the best service we can from the winning bidder.”

Currently, the Town serves approximately 507 residents within its corporate limits and this new contract focuses exclusively on residential curbside pickup, offering a once-weekly service.

Additionally, the town encourages proposals that include recycling services.  Recycling is not currently offered in Yemassee, and the town is interested in exploring the possibility of introducing a recycling program, so proposals with and without this option will be considered.

The previous contract included 19 commercial dumpster customers; however, the town will no longer provide this service.  Town-funded commercial service will be limited to roll carts.

The Town and contractor will agree to continue to provide the solid waste containers and negotiate the bins needed for recycling.

Bids are due to the Town of Yemassee by close of business (5 PM EST) on December 1, 2023

The focal point of the four counties:

Yemassee is a growing Lowcountry town in Beaufort and Hampton counties in the U.S. State of South Carolina. The population was 1,429 at the 2020 census. Yemassee is also very near Colleton and Jasper counties' borders and is often considered the geographical center or heart of the Lowcountry region.

The town is divided by the county line between Beaufort and Hampton counties, which follows the roadbed of the CSX railroad. As defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Beaufort County portion of

Yemassee is included within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Yemassee hosts one of the few commercial breeding facilities of non-human primates in the entire United States (Alpha Genesis, Inc.). Several historical plantations such as Bindon, Cotton Hall, Jerico & Tomotley are within the Town limits.

Yemassee is accessible from three exits along Interstate 95 (exits 33, 38, and 42), which runs west of the town limits. Alternate U.S. Highway 17 and U.S. Highway 21 run through the town. S.C. Highway 68 connects Yemassee with other communities in Hampton County, including Varnville and Hampton, the county seat.

The town is also home to a historic Amtrak station, which serves as the principal rail access point for the Lowcountry region and, for decades, was the start of a recruit’s journey through Paris Island and the Marine Corps.
